Volunteer Coach Screening and Monitoring Procedures

The safety and welfare of the children and young adults with disabilities who take part in KEEN’s activities shall be of paramount concern to those associated with KEEN. In order to safeguard the children and to insure the involvement of outstanding volunteers, KEEN shall abide by the following procedures:

  • Reference checks shall be conducted for all volunteers after their attendance at two KEEN sessions. As part of these reference checks, a series of questions will be posed which are intended to elicit both positive and negative information about individuals who seek to participate in KEEN. In the event the reference check suggests that an individual is not appropriate for one-to-one coaching of children with disabilities, this volunteer shall be requested to refrain from further participation in the program. This request shall be provided to the volunteer in writing. When appropriate, referrals will be made to a volunteer clearinghouse for the pursuit of suitable, alternative volunteer activities.

  • In the event a problem or impropriety involving a volunteer is brought to the attention of the Board of Directors (“Board”), a Committee of the Board (appointed by the President of the Board) shall meet to consider the circumstances and to reach a determination as to an appropriate course of action. Such action may include:
    1. No action;
    2. Requesting additional information from a parent, volunteer or interested person;
    3. Authorizing the President of the Board or his/her designee to meet with the affected volunteer and/or parent to discuss the situation in order to reach a resolution that is acceptable to all parties;
    4. Requesting that a volunteer immediately cease his/her participation in KEEN. In this event, the volunteer shall be informed of this decision in writing and shall be given the opportunity to meet with the Committee of the Board. If the volunteer requests such a meeting, the Committee shall meet with the volunteer at a location to be determined by the Committee. Using sound judgment and acting by majority vote, the Committee shall act on behalf of the Board in determining the appropriate course of action and shall report its action at the next meeting of the Board;
    5. Reporting information to the proper law enforcement authorities in the event of allegations which require such reporting; or
    6. Any other action deemed necessary by the Committee.

  • The Board reserves the right to terminate a volunteer for any reason consistent with these procedures.

  • All decisions regarding participation of volunteers shall be made on a non-discriminatory basis and without regard to race, gender, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation and/or national origin.
